Teens Taking Action provides youth with the opportunity to make a difference through leadership opportunities in schools and service to their communities. Ten teen leaders are selected from area high schools to lead student designed projects selected from the following focus areas: teen pregnancy, abstinence, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, homelessness, depression and suicide, drug and alcohol abuse and child abuse. The teen leaders recruit additional youth to participate in their selected focus area. The teen leaders also participate in required leadership training sessions and an educational abstinence class series.
Last year’s Teens Taking Action projects included class presentations on sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS in conjunction with Humboldt Unified School District’s abstinence education classes, an HIV/AIDS Fun Run, a musical showcase and dessert night during Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, presentations on depression and the creation of a brochure to help parents recognize the signs of depression in teens, and a raffle to raise money for Northland Cares, the local HIV/AIDS clinic. Other projects throughout the years have included a brick wall at Prescott High School promoting the North Star program, a girls’ sports scholarship program, the design of bookcovers, a student designed website, poster designs, a swim-a-thon, and a Life Decisions book written for teens by teens.
