MISSION STATEMENT

We advocate for reducing adolescent pregnancy and sexully transmitted diseases, enhancing youth leadership, and promoting healthy parentIng among teen parents through community collaboration in the Yavapai Region.

North Star is a community coalition and program of Catholic Charities Community working to reduce the incidence of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases in Yavapai County through outreach, educational programming, after school programs, parent/ child workshops, Teen Maze and special events, and through community awareness campaigns. North Star seeks to create an environment of family and community support that promotes education, self- development and individual responsibility, and promotes healthy youth development.

TEEN PROGRAMS
Teen Outreach Program (TOP), Teens Preventing Teen Pregnancy, Youth Leadership Project, Baby...Ready or Not, Just for Guys, Just for Gals, Girl Power!, teen parenting groups, Teens Taking Action, TAPP Players Drama Troupe, WINGS (Women Involving Neighborhood Girls in Sports), and Building Healthy Relationships

PUBLIC EDUCATION
Speaker's Bureau, Parent/Child Workshops, Training for Youth Workers, Quarterly Newsletter, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month (May) and Community Breakfast, Let's Talk Month (October), Poster Contests, Information, Resources and Referrals. All North Star programs are free of charge and open to the public.

HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM
Educational series featuring a variety of curricula for youth in grades 6-12, Plain Talk and Facts for parents, Creative Writing Workshops, and Creative Contests. Health Educators are based in Prescott and cover Yavapai County.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS
North Star, Youth Count, Yavapai College and the Yavapai County Community Health Services present Teen Maze each April so area youth can see firsthand the consequences of life choices. Athletic and Music scholarships are available to middle and high school girls to encourage their participation in recreational activities. North Star also offers mini grants for qualified projects throughout the county. Girls & Sports Day is a collaboration between North Star, Prescott YMCA, Prescott Parks and Recreation and Girl Scouts-Arizona Cactus-Pine Council, Inc. The TOPAZ survey given at Prescott High School is a collaboration between Prescott Unified School District, North Star, Youth Count, and the University of Arizona.

FUNDING
North Star's funding is provided by the Arizona Department of Health Services, Arizona Department of Economic Security, Administration for Children and Families/Community Based Abstinence Education Program (formerly SPRANS), United Way of Yavapai County, The Catholic Church Charity and Development Appeal, as well as through private donations and fundraisers.
